Is Online Dating Consuming Your Energy? Try These Tips

By Krisvis On May 6, 2009 Under Dating Tips

While online dating can be fun, interesting and possibly result in a meaningful relationship, it can also consume a significant, if not massive amounts of your time and energy. All of us would like to determine the perfect partner, if we have not them already. The Internet, while it can provide an ample occasion to meet new singles, it may also offer an opportunity for self inflicted drama. It would be cautious to closely monitor your time online, while also keeping an eye on your emotions related to your online interactions. After all you do want to attract your ideal partner, and you can probably do so if you feel good about yourself, and your interactions with others online reflect those good feelings.

Of course this can be quite a challenge. Depending on the sites you frequently visit and the photos or profiles you post; you may or may not get a lot of attention. If your profile does attract a lot of interest, guard against the “player syndrome.” That occurs when you have the opportunity to communicate with numerous people during the same time period. This may be viewed as an interaction on the site as somewhat of an online dating smorgasbord. You may discover yourself overlooking quality matches, and that you are spending too much time interacting with the ‘not so good’ matches, simply because you have cultivated a habit of doing so.

Many people report that this particular situation can eat up enormous sums of time, that could be put to better use. If you have a demanding business schedule or a similar situation, your online love hunts may begin to chip away at time that could or should, be spent focused on more important things.

If you do not get a lot of attention, it is important to remain focused on your own opinion, rather than seeing yourself through the eyes of others. Do not take it personally. If you find yourself feeling discouraged by the lack of interest shown in your profile, you need to examine it more closely, make your self-esteem shine through, and make sure you outline what you are seeking in a partner.

Be patient. Look for areas where personal growth will help you, and find reasons to be happy with your independence. You are the most important person in your life. You are the person you will spend the most time with. Why not love yourself most? Great relationships do not lead to love, but love leads to great relationships. So make sure to love yourself first. If you take care of yourself, you put yourself in a position to truly benefit others, and look after the interests of others.

Has online dating become an obsession for you? If you check your email several times daily to check if you have any new messages, or you feel worried when you do not have new messages in your inbox, you are likely to become addicted. So how can you maintain your balance, and keep your positive energy flowing? Here are a few suggestions.

1. Schedule a time to review and reply to any interests shown to you, or who have expressed interest in others, preferably once every few days.
2. Be realistic. Look at it as a way to discover potential friends first. Cultivate that possibility, and the rest will happen automatically. Do not get too dreamy about people you have never even met.
3. Be like the person you want. Are you searching for an Internet player or someone who is obsessed with online relationships? If not, you may want to regularly observe your emotions and attachments to whom are communicating with. If you become obsessed, you will possibly attract someone else who is obsessed. “You reap what you sow”. Hence be balanced, level headed and reasonable. This will attract good people towards you, even if only for friendship purposes.
4. Have fun. Do not get too serious about it.  Try to have a wait and see attitude, and then you can save the seriousness for when the relationship really blossoms.

All in all, with the advantages of online dating, it too has its pitfalls. Be cautious, be balanced and do not expect too much out of it. Just try and enjoy the activity without being completely immersed.
